How long does shipping from the UK to China take?
Measured first-hand from carrier-published schedules for the October 2026 window, port to port. Every row below carries the number of sailings it was measured across, so you can see how thin the coverage is on this direction compared with the outbound lane.
| Lane | Sailings | Transit | Direct or relay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felixstowe → Shekou | 9 | 34–35 days | Direct, 34–35 days |
| Felixstowe → Ningbo | 9 | 43–76 days | All direct |
| Felixstowe → Shanghai | 9 | 47–55 days | 3 direct at 47–48 days, rest by relay |

Why is this direction so much slower?
Frequency, not distance. On the outbound lane from China we measured 2,558 sailings to a single port in one month. On this direction the deepest lane carries 9, and several carry 3. Fewer direct calls means more consignments relay through a hub, and a relay adds weeks rather than days — which is why one lane here spans 36–82 days while another is 34–35.
The practical consequence is that the sailing, not the price, is the thing to book around on this lane. A weekly outbound service lets you choose your week; a service with 3 sailings in a month does not.
What can you send, and through which channel?
The transport is the easy half. There are three broad channels and they clear differently:
| Channel | Typical fit | Clearing |
|---|---|---|
| Express courier | Samples, documents and small parcels | Courier's own clearance arrangements, door to door |
| Postal | Personal and low-value items | Postal channel, with its own allowance rules |
| Sea groupage (LCL) | Palletised or bulky consignments from about 1 CBM | Commercial entry on arrival |
| Sea full container (FCL) | Household moves, machinery, bulk | Commercial entry on arrival |
Which is cheapest depends on volume, urgency and commodity rather than on any channel being better in itself. Personal effects, samples and commercial goods are not the same declaration, so the channel follows from what the goods are.
What does this page not cover?
China's own import duty, import VAT and the personal allowance threshold are not published here. We could not reach the General Administration of Customs sources from this environment, so those figures are unverified, and an unverified number is worse than an absent one. Ask us and the position is confirmed for your commodity against the rules in force at the time.
